Interactive Music Technology Experience Idea

  1. My experience would include all kids in a classroom working with garageband and samples.  They would create different loops, and use the loops to create a jam/groove.  The experience is a high school classroom design. It is designed for student to be able to expand their knowledge of music and to experience music in different ways.  I would need to know how to navigate garageband almost without any errors.  The students would have to know various basic technological terminology, such as loops.  Students would learn how to use basic tools in garageband and maybe even create different loops.  Students would be using Mac Computers and Garage Band.  The affordances would be that mac computers are pretty basic and easy to navigate.  The constraints would be that in garage band there are so many areas to mess something up.  It is important to me that I introduce students to new technology.   It is important to students because it shows them that music is not contained by a standard curriculum.  It is important that our youth are exposed to forms of music that continuously evolve.  If this experience was brought to a party it would have an amazing turn out. I imagine everyone at a party playing their mixes through speakers for everyone else.  I would also have them using a turntable and soundboard instead of garageband. The turntable and sound system would eliminate any advantages of standard notation. The people who will be participating in my experience will be people at a party.  The affordances of the original experience is that if people got lost they all could look up an the board or raise their hand for help.  The constraints would be that students would not be able to explore anything outside of garageband.   My re-imagining would allow people to come up as they want and share their experiences.  This experience is important to me because I believe that music should be viewed by all, and not just in a classroom.
